RETAIL THERAPY
RETAIL THERAPY is five channel video installation on TVs of variable size. The work was born out of a research about compulsive buying disorder and its relation to the advertising industry. During this research affected people mentioned that they developed a strong relationship to Calvin Klein Jeans commercials from the 80s. Some of them explicitly stated that these commercials probably had formative effects in the development of their disorder.
The work visually re-enacts five of these Calvin Klein commercials. In contrast to the originals the spoken text was replaced with confessions of shopping addicts. RETAIL THERAPY examines in what way and to what extent compulsive buying disorder is triggered by the advertising industry.
